Individual trees, as the dominant and fundamental component of forests, play a crucial role in regulating the biophysical processes of forest ecosystems. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR), also known as laser scanning (LS), provides a promising solution for characterizing and understanding forest structure and function. Three-dimensional (3D) individual tree delineation (ITD) using LiDAR data is a fundamental task for extracting tree-level 3D traits, supporting fine-grained forest management and protection.
The International Individual Tree Delineation (ITD) Contest 2025 aims to benchmark the state-of-the-art (SOTA) and advance the frontier of 3D ITD using close-range LiDAR data, evaluating methods across a variety of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods.
The contest provides LiDAR point clouds datasets as training, validation, and testing sets, including tree-level annotations. The datasets were collected from diverse forest types worldwide, using multiple platforms (terrestrial, mobile, and UAV).
The timeline of the contest is listed as follows:
- Contest Launch: 1, 2025 – registration opens, training and validation sets released
- Phase 1 Method Development: 1, 2025 – Jan. 17, 2026 – participants refine methods using trainingand validation set and monitor real-time ranking
- Phase 2 Method Testing: 18 – Jan. 22, 2026 – testing set released; participants submit ITD results with method descriptions for scoring
- Phase 3 Results Verification: 19 – Jan. 25, 2026 – top six teams submit files for verification
- Winner Determination: 26 – Feb. 10, 2026 – organizers verify submissions and finalize the winner list
- Winner Announcement: 10, 2026
After the contest, a dedicated workshop section will be held at an international academic conference. The top six teams will be invited to attend, participate in the award ceremony, give oral presentations, publish manuscripts in the proceedings, while receiving travel funding of up to USD 3, 000.
